Three weeks on Thyroxine
I recently got diagnosed with inactive thyroid and have been put on a low dose (50mg) of thyroxine to give it a bit of a kickstart. I had been feeling run down and lacking in energy prior to going to the Doc’s but it had been going on for so long I felt that may be that was my natural state. Or that it was just a consequence of stress and tough times and the like.
Armed with this new knowledge – and a box of thyroxine – I had visions of suddenly becoming energized and full of boundless enthusiasm for life. The sort of person who leaps out of bed on a morning, runs 5 miles and then seeks out “new worlds to conquer” at work and so on. Have to say that I am still waiting for that to happen but it HAS made some difference.
I noticed some vague differences to how I was feeling after a few days. I started exercising regularly again (although this was also due to me worrying about my cholesterol) and found that I was going to bed later at night. Previously I had been feeling that tired I was going to bed earlier and earlier and my bedtime was starting to overlap with my son’s – and he’s eleven !
As far as feeling more energetic goes I have noticed a bit more “get up and go” but its very uneven. One Sunday I just couldn’t keep still and got absolutely loads done ’round the house and in the yard. I thought “wow – if this is what its like then BRING IT ON!” The next couple of days, disappointingly, I felt as flat as a pancake.
Like all middle-aged men I augment my Doctor’s advice by finding someone at work who has the same problem and asking them about it and I managed to track down someone who has been on thyroxine for years. She has been on a dosage as high as 200mg – real “Speed Queen” territory! Anyway she advised that it takes a couple of months to get used to it and for your system to find its new natural level, until it does then things can be a bit up and down. This will be why I’m booked in for another blood test in about 6 weeks.
It will be interesting to see how my cholesterol is going too – I’m hoping that my metabolism will be burning fat a bit more efficiently and that should bring my levels down. I have dropped a bit of weight around the middle over the last couple of weeks and I still find this a bit ironic – judged against most Australian blokes I would be categorized as “dangerously underweight” (see below)
Anyway, until then all I can do is just keep doing the right things and hope for the best.
Cheers!
