The clear and present danger of flip flops

We know that the UK is currently “doing it tough” with the economy but who would have thought that the humble flip-flop (or “thongs” as they are known in Australia) would be adding to the burden? Apparently this humble item of footwear is costing the National Health Service £40 million per year.

Does anyone have the comparable stats from Australia?
