Packing my bags for the misty mountains

Newlands Valley in the Lake District - Photo by Ann Bowker

Actually I’m not – but I wish I was.

More “blog neglect” going on I’m afraid, life is very busy at the moment and I have some “paying jobs” to attend to so the new content has been few and far between. I have been meaning to post a link to this site for a while though. Beautiful photos of some of the best countryside in the world (the Lake District in the UK) – certainly responsible for me pining to visit another one of my adopted homes!

Sub-Culture

submarine at rockingham foreshore

This photograph is of the conning tower of a decommissioned submarine, which is sited in a park along Rockingham foreshore, by the beach. I was hoping that the sky would “pink up” a bit to add some more colour as the sub looms up out of the Earth but, there you go… There is a (missing) plaque which I assume had all sorts of salient information about what the sub was called and when it was retired etc – if it is ever recovered I will update you all! The sub is sited next to a set of guns which were preserved from HMAS Derwent, which was sunk West of Rottnest Island in 1994 (as you can probably tell – this plaque was still in place).

AC/DC in Kerrang! 1981

By , June 6, 2011 11:07 pm

angus young ac/dc

This is the 30th Anniversary front cover of the first ever edition of UK heavy-metal magazine Kerrang! At that time Aussie rockers AC/DC were flying high after their seminal “Back in Black” album and the follow up “For those about to Rock…” was still in the pipeline. Ah!, happy days….

A great shot of lead guitarist Angus Young in all his fake-schoolboy glory with his Gibson SG well to the fore! Amazing to think that he is still doing that now, aged 56, and long may it continue.

Eagle-eyed heavy metal enthusiasts will also note that Wakefield’s very own “VARDIS” also featured in this edition. And if that Australia / Wakefield crossover doesn’t sum up everything that this blog is about I don’t know what does ;)

Jenna Randall’s smile

By , May 30, 2011 1:13 pm

Photography is a hobby of mine but I am mostly into photographing landscapes, buildings and things. People, in my opinion, are nothing but trouble! My wife is the opposite and loves to photograph people, particularly in emotional situations like weddings. I would be more inclined to agree if there were more smiles like this around the place. This is the UK’s olympic synchronised swimmer, Jenna Randall. Other than it being from the linked swimming website I don’t know who took the photo so I can’t credit them but it is a lovely shot.

Wakefield Photo Galleries Online

Open all hours...

I have just been browsing some Wakefield-related photo galleries from the site “twixtcalderandaire” like this one of the archetypal Northern “corner shop” in Agbrigg. Continue reading 'Wakefield Photo Galleries Online'»

Wakeypedia – the photography of Osgoldcross

By , March 14, 2011 1:09 pm

Being a (very) amateur photographer, I love to browse the galleries on Flickr and one of my favourite contributors is “Osgoldcross” a.k.a Kevin Wakelam. Kevin is a gifted photographer who does an absolutely outstanding job of capturing beautiful images in and around the Wakefield area. He is damn good at what he does anyway but his work has an added poignancy when you are so far away from your old home town and he seems to have a knack of featuring place that have been particularly meaningful or familiar to me.

Click here to dive into one of his photostreams and see that Wakefield is not just a stereotypical “it’s grim Up North” kind of place. Be prepared to browse for a while though, he has got quite a body of work on there and you won’t want to leave.

Photos from Augusta

The Lighthouse at Augusta

A couple of photos from our recent weekend away down south in Augusta WA. Firstly, the obligatory photo of the lighthouse that keeps a lonely vigil, gazing out over two oceans. At least it would be lonely if people didn’t keep stopping by to photograph it all the time.

Another shot of the lighthouse, this time from a distance and under a sky a lot less moody than before…

Augusta - beach and rocks...

This is the beach and the rocks at the far side of the old calcified water wheel.

Lots of blues at Canal Rocks

We snapped this on the way back through Yallingup. This is part of Canal Rocks – lots of lovely shades of blue!

Day tripping east of Perth – York

Railway sign in York WA

Today we took a drive out to the town of York, about 100 kms east of Perth. York was the first inland European settlement in Western Australia, established in 1831 by hardy farming types – many of its fine buildings date back to this 19th century period. It has to be said that for a small town York boasts a lot of historic buildings (it’s classified as a “Historic Town” by the National Trust) – several of the buildings remind me of the colonial style of Fremantle but without the maritime influence i.e less anchors everywhere!
