There is an interesting, if rather depressing, story today on www.news.com.au about a study that links tattoos of iconic Australian outlaw Ned Kelly, with early death. A study in South Australia found that men with Ned Kelly tattoos were far more likely to die a traumatic death (murder, accident, suicide etc) than men without one. Amazingly, men with this kind of tattoo were found to be EIGHT TIMES more likely to die by being murdered.

Obviously, the untold story here is about the demographics of men who choose to be tattooed with images of the outlaw. Kelly was no stranger to violence – during his outlaw career he killed three policemen and was eventually executed in Old Melbourne Gaol in 1880. His last words were “such is life”. Its not surprising that he would appeal to men who may be drawn to violence and a generally reckless life.
