Going troppo in the second hottest summer
Strictly speaking “going troppo” is a term to describe the effect the weather has on you up in the tropical North of Australia but as Perth swelters through the second hottest summer on record I think we are entitled to borrow it for a while.
Coming from the North of England I am used to a fair bit of variety in the weather and a generous dose of freezing conditions (at least) once a year but, right now, I can’t remember the last day it wasn’t hot. For some people, that might sound like paradise but, for me, it’s really starting to wear a bit thin and I feel like I am suffering from a bit of the “mango madness”. The daytime follows a predictable pattern; the sun rises into a neon-blue sky and it gets hotter and then gets hotter still. If we are lucky (and we often aren’t) it cools down a bit overnight but its the norm to have warm, sweaty nights. One consequence of this that takes a bit of getting used to is how the weather super-heats your car when you have left it parked somewhere – I once jumped in and set off quickly because I was in a hurry to get somewhere – inside a minute I had to pull over because the steering wheel was literally too hot to touch. I find that taking a nice cool shower whilst drinking an ice cold beer is a good way to beat the heat, although not while you’re driving
Anyway – a look at the weather forecast for next week tells me its going to be in the mid 30′s again but at least there is a chance of rain on several days. If it does – don’t be surprised to see me dancing around in it – click below you troppo mofo!
