About
Hello and welcome to “the distance in between” – this blog was initially intended to be a worthy online resource offering help & advice on everything to do with emigrating and living abroad. To be honest, that ended up looking too much like hard work so now it is a free-form collection of my Anglo-Australian musings. That suits me a lot better. My subject matter is anything relating to life in England and Australia, with preference given to the overlap of the two. A byproduct of this is that I have created one of the very few blogs on the web that says anything positive about Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
I emigrated from the UK to Australia in 2002 and I now live in Perth with my Australian wife and my son – you can read the short version of my Australian migration story here. It gets pretty dramatic in places but, if you’re of a nervous disposition – don’t worry, it turns out OK in the end.
A word about the photo above
The image above is of me by the remains of the jetty at Hamelin Bay, West Australia. It might not look like much now but this used to link Australia to the rest of the world. This jetty was used to load Karri timber onto ships bound for England, South Africa and India and, for a while, was the hub of a worldwide network of trade. Which I’m sure you will agree is deeply symbolic of something or other.

Pretty professional gareth and loretta! How much free time do you two have!?
Too much – clearly!
I have an English boyfriend and I’m Aussie currently in the UK on a 2 year visa- main purpose is to be close to him. He’s thinking of moving back with me to Oz but being in our early 20′s we’re both a bit nervous about how to go about having him in Oz to work and live. I just don’t want him to pop the question just so he can be with me in Oz as I just think he should do this when he feels the time is right and not from the fact I have to go back in 2 years time. But anyways, it’s lovely to read about your life with your move to Oz.
Thanks Savannah. Sounds like you guys still have plenty of time so no need to rush – it will probably all come good when the time is right eh ?
